MISTRAS, originally known as Physical Acoustics, started out in 1978 manufacturing Acoustic Emission monitoring systems and sensors. These systems were initially used in material testing laboratories in the 70's and 80's to detect the onset of damage in new materials such as steel, composites, concrete and ceramics or new forms of structures, many initially for aerospace, petrochemical and military industries.

Today, Acoustic Emission monitoring is used on many materials and across the built environment on awide variety industries and structures to identify or monitor for thepresence active damage or deterioration such as cracking, corrosion and wire break. MISTRAS have always complemented AE monitoring by integrating measurements from other sensors to allow cross correlation of results with the loading, movement or environmental loading on the structure. Today, MISTRAS also offer both traditional and innovative non-AE monitoring but applying a different logic and level performance to the collection, processing and display for data which assists in the management, analysis and interpretation of results reducing costs and human involvement.
